We have special Expancel products designed for food packaging. One of them has now been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in microagglomerated wine corks.

Microagglomerated wine cork is natural cork that has been ground, cleaned and molded into shape. In the process it loses some of the characteristics of the cork, such as its compressibility. There is also a risk of wine penetrating the cork. When you add Expancel Microspheres to the mix you restore the compressibility and the spheres provide a perfect seal keeping the wine out of the cork. We know our spheres provide advantages for the wine cork - now we also have proof that we have done what needs to be done to make it safe for contact with wine. That’s important for us.

Expancel wins the FDA's seal of approval for wine corks

Our Expancel FG52 DU 80 has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in agglomerated wine corks. This means that it has been subject to stringent testing and is deemed safe for contact with wines.

Not only is it safe but it also gives the wine cork the right resiliency and keeps the wine from penetrating the cork. This approval is a validation of our work to offer clean and high-quality products to the food contact industry.

It doesn't stop at microagglomerated cork

We are very excited about the opportunities Expancel Microspheres can give to food packaging. They provide an outstanding alternative for sealing food products, ensuring solutions with the highest levels of safety and consistency. This is shown not only by the FDA approval but also by compliance with the European regulation 10/2011 for plastic packaging and approval by the German food authority BfR for use in paper packaging.

Expancel’s compressibility ensures resilient seals that perform time and time again. No shrinkage, no water absorption. It gives consistent results that you can depend on. This can be used in a number of packaging technologies, such as cap seals, synthetic cork, coatings and paperboard. In fact, we are just at the beginning of exploring our spheres’ potential in this area.

We are proud to have taken our spheres to the next level in this industry and we look forward to working with our customers going forward.
